I built several 5 String Banjos in the 80's
This is one I built for myself. The neck is Black Walnut from a tree I cut down in my uncles yard. All the mother of pearl is hand sawed and inlayed.

BIG MISTAKE !
Below is a finger board I made. It took about 50 hours to cut out the mother of pearl with  jeweler's saw, route the board for the inlays, glue them in place. AND THEN "SAND OFF THE HIGH SPOTS". You will notice that a lot of the inlay has been sanded off. BIG MISTAKE! You've heard, 'haste makes waste'. This finger board now is displayed above my work bench as a reminder! "Lesson Learned"
